All About Tranexamic Acid

13 July 2023 | Acne

What is it?!

Tranexamic acid is both a tablet and a topical ingredient. Oral tranexamic acid has actually been used in the medical world for a long time as a blood-clotting agent, for example to treat people suffering with heavy periods. Tranexamic acid is now often used in dermatology as a brightening agent and as a treatment for hyperpigmentation.

How does it work?

Studies have shown that tranexamic acid has lightening effects on certain types of hyperpigmentation and prevents UV-induced pigmentation. It inhibits an enzyme that is involved in the synthesis of melanin, the substance responsible for pigmentation in the skin. This is thought to be the reason behind its brightening effects.

What does it treat?

All sorts! It can be used for the treatment of dark marks, hyperpigmentation from acne scarring and a type of hyperpigmentation called melasma. It can also be used as a general skin brightener.

Who can use it?

The good news is it is well tolerated by most! As with any ingredient in skincare there is always the possibility of a reaction so if it is the first time you are using it try a small amount on a test area at first.

How should I use it?

Tranexamic acid can come as a stand alone serum or it can be blended with other ingredients. At Uncouth, we create a custom blend of active ingredients and prescription grade ingredients depending on your skin type and your skin concerns. We generally advise you to apply your formula on an evening, after cleansing and before your moisturizer.
